Jerome Scott Jr, LMFT

I contacted Mr. Scott on 7/1/21 to inquire about family therapy. His name was listed as a doctor on Google, so I addressed him as such. Although I do appreciate his transparency, I found Mr. Scott to be quite terse and unfriendly, which can be off-putting to some people. I, personally, would suggest exploring other therapists.

Jerome is so kind and I believe that he has an internal light to him that is rare to find. As a person of color, I feel as I really connected to with Jerome and he was always kind to me and understood my religiosity. So wise and smart. I'd recommend to anyone and everyone. Keep in mind Im a girl in my mid 20s and felt the most comfortable with him.

During a session where I began discussing an incident I had with my spouse, I felt Jerome’s assessment of my relationship was rather one-sided and favored the male’s perspective in a way that seemed somewhat misogynistic, as if he had some bias as to how women “typically” act. He was quick to make assumptions and judgements rather than critically and objectively examining anecdotes and situations. When it came to non-relationship issues, he provided standard/average feedback - not bad but also not outstandingly insightful.

I do not like to leave negative reviews, as I know how damaging they can be. In this instance however, I feel like I have a responsibility to other potential clients to express our experience. Unfortunately, my husband and I had our first marital counseling session ever with Mr. Scott. We were hoping that he could help translate and validate our positions to each other. What happened was he was only able to see a man's perspective of the situation and insinuated that I was the entire problem. He wouldn't even entertain the possibility that my husband had anything to work on. He showed a complete lack of empathy and expressed clear contempt for everything I had to say. I have met with many counselors over the years to help address my own depression/anxiety issues and this is the only one who has made me feel like dirt. Unfortunately, after this profoundly negative experience, my husband and I are much less likely to seek outside help overcoming our conflicts than we were before.
