I was a patient of hers for several years. Martha is a professional and skilled psychotherapist. I highly recommend.

This and the other reviews are NOT “nada” but rather peoples’ real experiences with a very dangerous therapist. The only thing Martha did was make me feel really really bad about myself. And Martha’s choice of word for me and the many clients she failed? “Remorseless.”

Don’t be deceived by those nada reviews because she is truly amazing. One of the best!

I emailed Martha via her profile on Psychology Today. Even though her profile says she’s in NYC, she is actually in Santa Fe - but still only licensed for New York. She responded to my initial request for information but then, when I asked a few follow up questions, I got radio silence. Guess I’ll be looking elsewhere.

Martha’s mantra as a therapist is “I’m probably better than nothing!” At $300 a session, I sure hope it’s significantly better than “nothing.” Having been deeply hurt by Martha and her unorthodox approach, I do question whether her services are indeed better than nothing. You might actually be better talking to a brick wall. Or a real professional.

Martha seems to enjoy waxing poetic about mutual respect and compromise, responsibility and reparation, self-reflection and humility. But in real life, it’s Martha’s way or the highway. If you dare to disagree with her, offer an alternative point of view, or point out a blind spot in her understanding, she will mute you - on Twitter and in person. She is not interested in open dialogue or discussion. She simply wants to preach and have her voice be the only one heard, which makes for a rather one-sided therapeutic relationship. A recent New York Times article warned readers looking for a therapist to “avoid the ‘TV personalities’ and popular book authors like the plague.” To this I would add narcissistic bloggers and overzealous Tweeters.

Martha Crawford is truly a one-of-a-kind "therapist." She does not believe in the medical model, or any proven or studied school of therapy. Instead she relies on her own “experience” and “didactic” learnings, providing services which are not "the kind of services that an insurance company wants to reimburse for” (her words). She has a complete disregard for any boundaries in therapy: my 45 minute sessions could last anywhere from 35-90 minutes depending on her mood, she encouraged near-daily contact outside session, she revealed personally-identifiable information about me on social media and, in session, she did most of the talking. She dispenses some wisdom on her long-winded blog, but sadly this does not carry over to her clinical practice. She is dangerous, self-centered and entirely self-serving. There are good therapists out there. Martha Crawford is NOT one of them.
