My sister was seeing Randi starting about 20 or so years ago for anxiety. Over the last 20 or more years that Randi has been “treating” my sister, my sister has regressed tremendously. Her anxiety was never treated. She became a very paranoid adult and over the last 5-10 years has begun to accuse our parents of doing harmful things to her that never occurred, such as forceful dieting and forcing her to watch violent television. I attended a visit between Randi and my sister as a way to try and support her but quickly realized the their relationship was inappropriate and not what I would expect from someone with a PhD. I know you cannot fault a therapist for the information provided by their client, however you would think someone would be able to identify the issues occurring over time and, at the very least, make a referral to someone with a different expertise when warranted (in this case it would have been helpful 15-18 years ago). My sister continues to struggle to this day and has become paranoid and demonstrates borderline personality disorder behaviors. If you love your family member, please consider someone else who will recognize a problem and make appropriate referrals when unable to treat.
