He was so busy expressing his enthusiasm for the possibility of Permitless Carry becoming law in Texas, he gave me little or no sedation during my eye surgery. I heard every word of his loud and animated conversation with the surgeon. I felt much more pressure on my eye than I had during my earlier surgery with a different nurse anesthetist. The numbing drops did their job and I felt no pain, but the experience was far more physically jolting and stressful than the first eye had been. After it was over, I sat up, as alert and aware as when I walked into the room, and stated my opinion that guns were not an appropriate topic of OR conversation, especially given the numbers of people we've lost to gun violence. As Richard Childs got me into the wheelchair and pushed me out of the OR, he muttered under his breath about protecting his family -- evidently ignorant of the many studies which have shown that having a gun in your home significantly increases the risk of accidental shootings.
