The practice emphasizes genetic testing for medication decisions in the absence of getting to know patients and taking a full family and personal history. The genetic tests are limited and show only a subset of the genes that actually regulate mental health and it is not possible to make diagnoses using only these results.Requested evaluation of young adult child for possible ADHD. They were told to stop taking their SSRI for lifelong anxiety and depression for months while waiting on results, and then were told they are at risk of psychosis based on the results of one gene mutation that also could indicate ADHD, anxiety, and depression. They were prescibed an anti-psychotic when we have no family or personal history to indicate that condition and the medicine induced anxiety attacks.Months later, we are no closer to an ADHD diagnosis and now have the unfortunate and damaging concern of potential psychotic break, which is improbable given our family and personal history.
