Excellent Opthalmologist
My granddaughter had strabismus (crossed eyes). She had surgery with Dr. Black and now she has perfect vision and her eyes are straight. He is a blessing.

Dr Black
Patient for 10yrs, missed one appt in Nov 2022 and they inactivated my account and told me to find another provider! They mentioned it was inactivated bc my child already had another provider.. (a referring provider from 10yrs ago- hence the reason we were there!). The front desk also told me my child was “plenty old enough to see an adult optometrist” and i explained she was referred back to him again bc he is a pediatric MD. I can’t rate this MD bc i was never given the chance to meet with this Dr. Black, only the one that retired. That was another good reason she thought it was fine to go somewhere else (nevermind continuity of care and medical records i guess). I didnt have a balance with them, etc. just one missed appt in 10 years. Please call Eye Medical. They were so nice and it didn’t take 3+months to get my child in.

My son was referred to Dr. Black by his pediatrician after an abnormal basic eye screening was conducted at his 1 year well check up. It was found he had different sized pupils and was sent for a full eye exam. Check-in went well despite his front desk being overwhelmed with how busy they were. My son and I were called back for a basic screening and to have his eyes dilated. The nurse that assisted us was absolute wonderful with him, and her overall demeaner was exactly what you'd expect and want someone to have who works with child. They let us know that it'd take about 30 minutes for his eyes to dilate which was no problem and expected. After spending an hour and a half waiting to be called back for his eye exam we then spent an additional amount of time waiting for Dr. Black in which I finally opened the exam door and stood in the doorway waiting as it seemed we were forgotten. Dr. Black spent a total of 3 minutes examining his eyes before telling me he would be referring us onto a pediatric oncologist for further testing as different sized pupils could indicate neuroblastoma. From there he was unable to provide any follow up information as to what that could mean, what type of testing an oncologist would be providing and what the process would look like from there. When asked if his office would be contacting children's hospital or if this would be sent to his pediatrician or if I needed to handle it, he had no idea and could provide no answer whatsoever. You can imagine my fear and frustration after being told my 1 year old was being referred to an oncologist and he could provide no insight or comfort to the matter at hand, I was simply told it could be nothing or it could be cancer in a very poor bed-side manner. After spending over 2 hours in his office, receiving horrifying news and no help, I called my son's pediatrician who immediately went to work and was able to get us in with an oncologist within 2 days. After meeting with the oncologist he was horrified to learn that Dr. Black would immediately rush to extreme testing such as a CT scan and MRI and exposing him to radiation from the machines without suggesting additional testing beforehand. The pediatric oncologist was extremely reassuring that such extreme measures shouldn't be taken in a very healthy presenting child and has sense recommended us to another pediatric ophthalmologist in New Orleans. Sadly it was learned Dr. Black is the only option for a pediatric ophthalmologist in Baton Rouge and the next closest is New Orleans, however a small commute for a second opinion is no issue at all when it comes to the proper care and evaluation of a child. Dr. Black in total spent less than 5 minutes with my child in the entirety of the 2+ hours we were there and somehow jumped to the immediate conclusion, my child needed to see a pediatric oncologist. Needless to say due to horrible bed side manner and overall traumatizing experience, we will never, ever return to his office after meeting with other medical professionals. I do want it to be known though, his nurse was truly spectacular and the only positive experience we had during our appointment.

Thank you guys :)
I am a sophomore in high school. I have been going to this office since I was in the third or fourth grade. Dr. Black is a fantastic doctor and has helped me through my retinal detachment since it came up as a child. The staff are all very sweet and Dr. Black’s bedside manner is great. Everyone at that office deserves all the praise in the world. Thank you all for everything you’ve done for me and everyone else you’ve helped :)

Very polite staff and doctor, but he will only verify the eye sight of your child. If there is something else wrong with their eyesight, he does not pay any mind to it, because the dollar is more important than correctly treating a child. We have been told that our child has something going on with their eyesight by multiple people in varying levels of medical fields. So not only did we go once about this, but we went a 2nd time and both times he said there was no issue. Come to find out from a Real Eye Doctor, who doesn't blow off patients, there is something wrong with her eyes though neurologically, instead of physically. Any doctor worth their degree should have caught this, but instead he used a technicality to avoid a somewhat easy diagnosis, because he wouldn't get paid well to treat it. Please go to someone else, if your child needs more than just glasses.

As a doctor, I would give Dr. Black 5 stars, but his office and policies have left me wanting to find a new MD. It took over 3 months to make an appointment. Our family has used him for other kids. Your appointment most always, will run late, and I used to not mind that being he is a specialist. The staff does not want to be bothered to schedule follow up appointments- in fact they make no mention about follow up usually, unless you mention it to them and they refuse to schedule you for an appointment, if your next appointment is not within 6 months. I feel like my business is no longer wanted . I will give Dr Black props for wearing his mask very well, but the rest of his staff doesn’t. I do feel that it might be a bit much for very young children to see Dr. Black wearing a gas mask. The waiting room is too crowded with Covid, and the front desk does not answer the phone or return phone calls. The office used to have at least 2 doctors, but I believe is down to Dr. Black.

Arrived 3:35 for 3:50 appt to do paperwork. Wasn’t called back til 4:30. When I complained the staff said dr is a specialist and it’s always going to be that long. Nice empathetic answer!!!!! After brief nurse consult they dilated eyes. Why couldn’t we do that while we waited. Didn’t see dr until after 5 pm. Need recommendation for new dr!!!!!

DrAndrewBlack has the worst bedside manner of any doctor I’ve ever met. He reprimanded my oldest child for playing in my purse to keep her occupied during her younger sisters appt. he also would not stop the eye exam when my baby was screaming in pain from his exam. I stepped in between him and her and forced him to stop. I will never see him again.

Went to Dr Black’s office for the first time today to discuss eye muscle surgery. He spent a full hour examining the patient and going through details. He answered all of our questions and translated the medical terms in non medical manner. Staff was helpful and took care of details effectively.

Dr. Black and his staff were AWESOME with my three-year old son who is not always an easy patient. They were very gentle with him and made the experience fun. Dr. Black patiently answered all of my questions and was an all around great doctor.
