Unacceptable
My farther was dying in the hospital. We requested that all life sustaining measures be discontinued, including having his pacemaker turned off. She wrote orders to discontinue the meds immediately, but claimed that turning off the pacemaker was not her responsibility. The next day she showed up and we made the same request to deactivate the pacemaker. Again, she deferred responsibility and didn’t take action. Only after sustained intervention by a great and caring nurse who did she write the order for the pacemaker to be deactivated. In all, order took nearly 30 hours to write and then we had to wait for it to be executed. As the “hospitalist” caring for my father, it was her responsibly to find answers to questions she did not know and follow up with answers to repeated requests for information.
