World-renowned for a reason!
Dr. Mithoefer performed a left knee arthroscopy, partial medial & partial lateral meniscectomy, chondroplasty medial femoral condyle, abrasion chondroplasty lateral tibial plateau, notchplasty, and revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The outcome speaks for itself - I was walking without crutches the next day. I'm a former professional athlete and currently work as a trainer, so my livelihood was at stake. Please remember that if you are heeding advice from someone rating one of the world's most renowned orthopedic surgeons by how long they waited in a waiting room, then YOU are the dolt - not just them. Also bear in mind that he works out of the 'burbs of Boston, which tends to be the jamoke center of the universe - some of the reviews at HealthGrades.com are case in point.

Awful Experience
I was referred to this doctor for bilateral knee pain. I tore the right knee causing a defect and the left knee was grade 3 chondromalacia. He refused X-rays and failed to diagnose the underlying condition, patella alta and told me that the left knee didn’t need any surgical treatment despite multiple failed injections before having met. MACI reps have since contacted me and told me that both knees may be treated with MACI but with little to no success, without treating the underlying condition, patella alta. my right knee, which he operated on to collect a biopsy and to clean up via arthroscopy feels worse than it did before surgery. because I had car issues and he was going on a three week vacation creating an impossible situation for a follow up before his vacation he canceled my PT early. I do not trust this man, and I regret trusting him and letting him scare me into the surgery because now I have two crippled knees due to his dismissive attidude and lack of treatment. STAY AWAY!

Great experience with Dr. Mithoefer. I retore my meniscus in my right knee at age 46 and was running 20 miles/week again 12 weeks later. Extremely happy with the outcome here.

I saw Dr Mithoefer for a torn meniscus. I waited almost two hours to be seen. I found him to be quite arrogant. Maybe he is a good doctor but he just assumed he was going to be operating on me. I declined. I waited almost 2 hours to be seen then he spent 10 minutes with me. I don’t think so. Also when I ask questions I expect more than one word answers . It was if I was being a bother.

Dr. Mithoefer is well-mannered, careful, and a brilliant surgeon. He repaired 3 severed tendons on my rotator cuff exactly one year ago and my recovery has been flawless. With his care and direction for PT, I am able to use my arm / shoulder for most functions and it continues to get better. He is the best, as is his team.

I am very grateful to Dr. Mitheofer since he helped me back to playing tennis and golf. I struggled with a chronic shoulder injury and had seen several other docs. He took his time to look at all my previous treatments and MRIs and explained to me what my options are for treatment. What was most helpful was his honest discussion about realistic expectations. He discussed all options with and without surgery and I opted to get it fixed. 6 months later I am playing golf and can play tennis without pain. It's a miracle. He has a fantastic team that is always supportive. I am so happy. Thank you, doc!

Dr. Mithoefer is great! After having numerous other knee procedures by another surgeon I was sent to see Dr. Mithoefer to discuss other possible treatments due to my young age and wanting to prolong the obvious replacement. Dr. Mithoefer understood and offered many possibilities for my future. The first step was the arthroscopic procedure. I’m feeling great already and will discuss more at post-op.

I was referred to Dr. Mithoefer with sudden shoulder pain. After sending me for testing, he did not seem to know how to diagnose and treat my injury but was not willing to say so, and could not advise me on where to go for effective treatment. His manner was abrupt and his explanations vague. I prefer a doctor who understands and admits to the limits of his knowledge and will work with a patient to get them the help they need.

I am so impressed with Doc M. I barely had pain after my surgery and the healing was faster than what l expected. He always was helpful and cheered me on during my rehab. Set me up with a fantastic PT as well. Can not recommend anyone more.

Upon meeting me, he declared I didn't need surgery and therefore should go see someone else. He didn't see to listen or care. If you don't need surgery, don't even bother.

Dr. Mithoefer is outstanding. I tore my ACL and meniscus playing ice hockey and i was back on the ice six months after surgery. He understands the athlete's mindset and made himself available to answer any questions I had. I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Mithoefer would receive a 10-star rating if I could do so. Prior to injury/surgery and now 3 months post-op, I was and am currently back to working full capacity as a Firefighter. I am even back to competing at high levels of wrestling, kickboxing and mixed martial arts. He called me the day after surgery to chat and answer any questions, making me feel extremely cared for. Commit to surgery -> listen to Dr. Mithoefer-> work hard at PT -> patience -> return to work/sport. Its that simple

I am grateful to Dr. Mithoefer. He inspired confidence in me from the day of my first consult through my surgery and now my recovery. He fixed a 20 year old injury of my torn rotator cuff, bicep repair and removed bone spurs. I am an anxious patient; however, he and his team are superb.

I saw Dr. Mithoefer in 2009, and he diagnosed me with Shoulder Impingement Syndrome. He was abrupt and spent little time explaining my condition to me. He impatiently said that I could continue the hobby that caused it (dancing). One year later I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in that shoulder, which is now causing me great pain and will worsen. I had to google it and teach myself. Had I understood any of these details of my condition, I would have made different choices.
