My experience with Dr. Devinsky
Years ago, I happened to come across a book named 'A Guide to Understanding and Living with Epilepsy' that was on sale for $1 outside a Borders bookstore. The book made me much more aware of my options so I made an appointment with the author, Dr. Orrin Devinsky. Other doctors had previously tried at least a dozen medicines to control my seizure to no avail (with many negative side effects) and I had almost given up hope. Dr. Devinsky weaned me off of one of my medications and scheduled me for surgery under the care of Dr. Werner Doyle. The surgery was successful, Dr. Devinsky took me off the last medication over the next year and I started living a much more comfortable life. Years later my mom had a seizure and, while talking to her neurologist, I told him why I was familiar with the condition. When I mentioned my doctors, he said 'Oh, the Dream Team'. The cause of the seizures was a knotted capillary and, surgery is not a solution for everyone, but I would recommend Dr. Devinsky.

Terrible doctor terrible administration
The problem is a lot of bad docs like Devinsky and terrible leadership. For example Annette Johnson of NYU. This piece of flaming garbage, has been rattling around NYU for ages costing you an absurd amount of money.

Loses interest
I was his patient for a decade until recently, when I found out he “no longer had me as a patient” in a note in MyChart. I was diagnosed with epilepsy after brain surgery. Because the seizure did not respond to 3 trials of different medications - he started pushing me toward more surgery, wanting to cut off the affected part of my brain. (Since I went switched hospitals, I found out that was unnecessary.) He kept telling me I was shortening my life and had a high probability of dementia, etc. So?.. Also, only one doctor in NYU agreed to operate on me for some reason. No explanations. They want money and content to write more books. It’s a shame because I volunteered for him at FACES. Do your research!

Dr Devinsky treated my 10 year old daughter over 20 years ago. Prior to finding him, her other neurologist just kept increasing her medications to the point of her being a zombie. Dr Devinsky actually lowered her dose and eventually she became seizure free and off of medication. You WILL NOT find a more knowledgeable, sincere and caring Dr. My daughter is 33 and seazure free.

Anyone but this man
If all of his knowledge could include kindness maybe he'd make a good doctor. Unfortunately he doesn't pay attention to details and prefers to offer terse advice and over medicate. I have never had a worse experience with a doctor. Look elsewhere because he's not paying enough attention to care appropriately for your child.

Arrogant/God complex/zero humility
Forgets what he says visit to visit. Comes unprepared but makes sweeping generalizations. Insists on his expertise instead of looking at the patient before him. Is unkind, uncaring, offers no hope. Cavalierly announces, "Your child has autism", upon first meeting them. Believe he may be on the spectrum himself. Being "a man of science" is mentioned so often as to lose meaning.

Most awful experience. I have never experienced such a cold and uncaring Dr. He literally hung up the phone on me in a time of crisis and told me to find a new Doctor. Many of his office staff reflect similar attitude.

There is no better doctor than Dr. Devinsky. He is the most kind, compassionate, caring and knowledgeable man. If there was a way to clone him it should be done. He better never retire because I will not take my son to see any other neurologist. I can not say enough good things about him as a doctor and a person. He has not lost his human side. A truly wonderful person.

I had a horrible experience with this doctor. After he recommended I have brain surgery and assured me I "would never even know it had happened" after I healed, I instead ended up fighting for my life for many months and suffering with after effects for years. He did nothing to help me and claimed my symptoms post surgery were psychosomatic. His agenda is to medicate and operate without concern for patients reactions or individual needs. Be VERY WARY OF HIM.

Dr. Devinsky saved my life! At 44 years old, I had my first seizure with two additional ones shortly thereafter. After meeting with Dr. Devinsky for almost two hours, he laid the cards out on the table in an honest and sincere way. He said that Epilepsy is not a science; it is an art and there are many grey areas. He said that it would take some time to come up with the right medicines to resolve the condition. In a matter of three months all was resolved and I have been seizure free since!

not only is Dr. Devinsky an excellent doctor, he is a very caring person. He helped my sister to the fullest, the best he can. Although she lost her battle with epilepsy, I always find myself thinking of all the things he has done for her.She adored him, looked forward to going to her appointments with him because he treated her so well.I would love to personally thank this man for all that he has done for her during her battle. Any person who talks down on him, truly doesn't know him. Thank you

Though busy and hard to get in touch with, you can trust his office Nurse to always take any concerns and emergency questions to Dr Devinsky and get back to you in a decent amount of time. Of course Dr. Devinsky always gives you his best at appointments and has always taken care of my son --- now for the last 25 yrs.

Dr. Devinsky is the best Dr I have ever had in my life! He is the only Neurologist I have ever had that understood and explained things to me so I could understand. His intelligence and interest in Epilepsy is beyond awesome!!!! He has helped me and my Epilepsy in ways that other Neurologist could not and I honestly would not trust anyone else!!! My family moved out of state, but I still travel to NYC to see Dr. Devinsky. That should tell you something!
