Excellent Care
Dr. Couldwell is excellent. I had to undergo a very challenging tumor removal. Dr. Couldwell and team made the experience very positive and gave significant piece of mind.

Worst Doctor
I had 1 appointment with Dr. CouldwellI in Aug of 2020. It was the most unprepared and unprofessional doctor's appointment I've experienced in my life. I've seen over 150 doctors, specialists, and surgeons over the past 7-8 years. I was there to inquire about getting a pituitary tumor removed that was diagnosed with 4 years earlier, and had grown 2mm in the last year per my last MRI. In addition to problems with an internal cyst in my neck and sitting on my brain stem. He silently reviewed my MRI and blood test results in a giant stack of printed paper instead of using the computer sitting right next to him. He said everything looked good, but I had to point out he was reviewing test results that were 4-8 years old. He disregarded all of my symptoms and walked out while I was still talking. 30 mins later a different Neurosurgeon came in and said he gave her my case because it wasn’t worth his time. I left. 3 weeks later I saw an ENT who removed the cyst and reduced my symptoms by 99%.

Doctor Couldwell and his team have been instrumental in my dad’s treatment on a WHO Grade III/Anaplastic Menigioma. If you’re looking for both one of the most technically talented surgeons in addition to a compassionate and good human being all in one, him and his team are absolutely critical. I’ve spent the last 20+ years helping my dad manage this brain tumor and it recently has evolved into a malignant tumor needing more aggressive treatment. My dad’s surgery required a team of nearly 20+ in the OR and collective operating time of 21+ hours. The fact that Doctor Couldwell’s team was completely organized with that many people in the room, performing such an aggressive surgery and was able to do it in complete orchestration and operations, is mind-blowing. We all have a lot to learn from the level of operations at the University of Utah and the level of technical expertise and coordination Doctor Couldwell and team have. They were able to perform a full gross total resection of my dad’s menigioma, requiring exoneration of his entire left eye, lifting half his face, removing tumor from front and left side of his brain, and cutting out ¼ of his skull. They were organized in being able to wake him up immediately after surgery and then helping him to transition from neuro ICU to Nielsen rehab for 3 weeks before conducting his cranioplasty. He was in the hospital for 33 days, but the follow-up treatment is now 30 days of radiation treatment and chemo along with the rest of Doctor Couldwell’s board. He is the head/chair of neurosurgery at the University of Utah/Huntsman so you have a full team of surgeons, doctors/oncologists on a tumor board that facilitate the best/all treatment options possible in the valley and more so top in the nation. We are incredibly fortunate to have Doctor Couldwell and his team here in Utah/west coast and that we have access to this care, he is a nationally recognized surgeon and it has truly helped to extend my dad’s life and has provided us hope in him having the ability to truly beat this tumor for good this time. At the end of the day, the technical skills of a neuro-surgeon come first and foremost in a setting when you have a family member battling an aggressive grade III tumor, you just score way more with Doctor Couldwell because he’s not only an incredibly talented surgeon, but an incredibly good person as well so you know that he’s in the fight with you just as much as you are with you or your family. For background, my dad has had 3 surgical resections for his menigioma. His second resection was done at Intermountain, it was 20xs smaller of a surgery but they sedated him for 5 days, he lost his speech for 5 months, no organization/operations in coordinating neuro ICU care ? rehab ? post-op care and his recovery was incredibly difficult. He was also mis/under-diagnosed with how aggressive his menigioma was and it honestly set us back 4 years in his treatment. I absolutely will not take my dad or any other family anywhere else for neuro/cancer acute care than the University of Utah and Doctor Couldwell’s team. After battling his brain tumor for 20+ years, the U and Doctor Couldwell’s team has been the absolute top-of-the line in not only technical expertise in neurosurgery, but complete coordination and optimized operations in complete consideration of the entire patient surgical, care, and post-op/recovery planning to provide the best chance possible in completely battling brain tumors at the root. I highly recommend this team if you personally are fighting, or have a family member needing neurosurgery care when battling brain tumors, you won’t find anything better in Utah- trust me, I’ve taken my dad to all and have experienced it all, the bad and the good surgeons, care teams, and hospitals over the last 20 years, you truly won’t find better.

On the morning of my operation Dr. Couldwell stood by me and said "we'll take good care of you". Guess my head falling during surgery due to improper preparation of the mechanism that held my head, which caused me to receive 11 staples in my head from the damage, is part of "taking good care of me"! I came into surgery with 1 nerve damaged and came out with 4! Bonus!!! I went in for a follow up appointment where he told me there was nothing wrong with me. Months later, at an additional visit, he told me I came in with damage to #6, and now have damage to #5, #3, and probably #4. It's been 1 1/2 years since surgery and still can't feel the right side of my face, can't open my right eyelid much, my tongue is tingling all the time, my speech is slurred, I get severe headaches regularly (since the operation), and I can't feel part of my left foot! After surgery I couldn't feel most of the left side of my body! But, the good doctor says that he can't explain all of my symptoms or issues???

I am sure Dr Couldwell is a very skilled and competent surgeon but for me, my initial visit was not good. When he finally came into the room he was accompanied by three others - his Fellow and two trainees. As the patient I found this very distracting . He proceeded to address the trainee doctors when looking at my MRI and it was almost as if I was interrupting them when I asked a question. On the few occasions he did address me I found his manner to be aloof, severe and more like that of a Funeral Director than a Surgeon. Bearing in mind we were discussing my brain tumor and this was my very first consult, I found the entire experience to be unacceptable on many levels and will be seeking out another Neurosurgeon who has more respect for the patient and their needs.
