He grew up in Denver, until he went to Cornell University for undergraduate education, and received his B.A. in biology from the school of Arts and Sciences. He returned to Denver, to attend Medical School at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He received his training in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical School, and then returned to the University of Colorado for his training in Pulmonary and Critical Care. During his time there he received a Ruth-Kirchstein Fellowship F32 Award, and continued to research role of macrophages in lung disease, with his main focus being Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He attended at the University of Colorado for a further three years before moving to private practice, working part time at National Jewish primarily as a Critical Care Physician. He also attended part-time at Colorado Acute Long Term Hospital, taking care of those with challenging long term pulmonary, and critical illness. He has twice been awarded the Peak Performer's Award for Critical Care. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, and Critical CareHis interests revolve around his family, skiing, snowboarding, Aikido, and languages.Dr. Voelkel is proficient in German, French, Japanese, and Spanish.
