Biography: I have a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). I have been a practicing Social Worker since 1973. and have worked in various fields over the years; Welfare, Substance Abuse, Clinical settings, and even in prisons. I have developed clinical programs, have been a fund raiser and a Community Liaison. Over the past 8 years, I have been in Private Practice. I live in the Greater Grand Rapids area where I have resided since 1984. My approach to therapy is based on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, REBT. Our actions and feelings are based on our thoughts about ourselves and situations. As an example, people don't make us angry or sad or hurt. We make ourselves feel this way because of what we are thinking about the situation. I work with people's thoughts and help them identify negative thoughts. These negative thoughts can be challenged and changed. This is effective in reducing anxiety, depression, and fear. It is a very interactive approach and one that produces results. I also use humor as a therapy technique. If we cannot laugh at situations or even ourselves, then we are overcome by sadness and depression. These techniques are suitable for many different issues and problems. They are designed to be short term treatments. The usual length of therapy is 3 to 12 months. Rarely does therapy go beyond a year. I prefer to talk clients via telephone or televideo. These are, in my opinion, more effective than email responses. I will do email, but I would prefer not to do therapy this way. Just thought you should know. My sessions are sometimes serious and sometimes fun. I look forward to working with you.

Biography: I am a licensed professional counselor and mental health service provider (LPC-MHSP) in TN. I have over 5+ years of experience in treating PTSD, specifically combat-related; substance use disorder; borderline personality disorder in men primarily; OCD; and other issues typically found in a mental health setting. I've spent the majority of my career working in a residential alcohol and drug program, which afforded me the opportunity to work with co-morbid disorders/issues that feed into addiction. I have assisted people in confronting personality issues, trauma, and have helped clients learn to balance their intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. I am also actively involved in research in a university setting. I received a Bachelors of Science in Clinical Psychology and a Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from East Tennessee State University. I have a background in social psychology, which I find beneficial during therapy as the principles are often at the core of many behaviors and attitudes/beliefs. Understanding social psychological theories and how they present within individuals serves to normalize our human experiences by showing that we are not alone. I believe that every individual knows the best way to live their lives, but sometimes may need someone to provide insight, guidance, or serve as a sounding board for thought processes/emotions/fears. I have a specific interest and a research background in PTSD surrounding combat. Seeking help in general, but especially following a traumatic event, is courageous. The first step is reaching out and I am here to assist you in this experience.

Since 2009 I have worked providing individual, couples, and group counseling. I spent the first half of my career working with individuals and families affected by substance use and the last several years I have worked in a private practice setting helping people with a variety of mental health concerns. While there are very few issues I have not worked with, I have spent a significant amount of time with those working to overcome depression, anxiety, ADHD, substance use disorders, PTSD, stage of life adjustments, and parenting stressors. My experience over the last 11 years has taught me to know my clients first. There are several theoretical approaches to providing counseling, but there is no one size fits all approach. My first goal is to know my clients and what might suit them best. I view my role as a guide, a helper, a teacher. I believe each individual and their autonomy is to be respected. Every tool used in therapy should be something you can use in a way that fits your life. I believe every person has what it takes to overcome the trials they face in life. I know reaching out for help can be uncomfortable for a variety of reasons, but I'm glad you took the step. I have hope we can work together to make it worth your investment.
