Went for treatment of my ADHD, told him I had trouble focusing, got easily distracted, would start many tasks and not finish any of them, trouble sleeping, always thinking about a million different things, etc all ADHD SYMPTOMS that was the only things I brought up. He started asking about my family and such and I told him because I thought there was no harm. Well he spent the rest of the appointment talking about healing my inner child and my parents divorce and how I didn’t see my father enough growing up???That’s the reason I have ADHD??? It was VERY BIZARRE, he’s an old white man so I guess I should’ve saw it coming but I was shocked by this approach. Not every problem a woman experiences is related to her father????? And single parents are capable of raising healthy children??? Just overall a very odd experience and on top of that I then was told he doesn’t prescribe medication anymore....would’ve been nice to know that at the beginning since i came for ADHD and ADHD only.....

I tried very hard with this guy. But I discovered early on that your first visit with him, he tells ALL of his patients the same thing— this model about having a “baby”!inside your brain who does your thinking and decision making for you. After a while I realized how nutty this was. As a person I liked him at first. He’s easy to talk to. But I never really got any concrete “therapy” or specific advice on how to cope with my anxiety and depression. He also has a bad habit of discussing other patients with you, which left me wondering what he was telling other patients about me. He doesn’t seem to have any doctor-patient privacy boundaries. Also he held weekly “group” sessions which accomplished nothing except him charging another visit fee. The last straw was when the state took away his permission to prescribe certain classes of drugs. I had to find someone knew. Thank god I did because I’m finally getting real therapy. Dr abrams needs to retire... he is almost 90.

Dr. Abrams is excellent. He always boosts my self-esteem with his upbeat personality and enrichment of my talents and gifts. He is a lot smarter than people give him credit for. He deserves appropriate recognition for having patience and compassion for mental illness.

I had been under the car of Dr. Abrams for over two years. He is unique . Do not let appearances trick you - he brings 60+ years of experience and a wealth of stories that make you laugh. If you want a fancy guy who listens and prescribes -he's not it. If you want someone that will cut through the BS and guide you through solving your problems, he's the one hands down.

For all of those whining about him answering phone calls during appointments: Stop whining and realize that when YOU try to call him you will get him immediately. If you judge a doctor based on the way he keeps his office or other idiosyncrasies, then you should go somewhere else. If you want a doctor who has tons of experience, has a sense of humor and cuts through the BS, Dr. Abrams is your man!!! Oh and the reason he doesn't prescribe certain meds is those meds are abused. He cares!!!

Avoid. He charges high rates and wants to act as a therapist rather than a psychiatrist. In other words, you’re paying the high cost of a psychiatrist but really only getting the work of a therapist. He refuses to write certain prescriptions, so if you’ve just moved to the city as i had and needed to find a new doctor to prescribe your medications, don’t count on it. He also wants to meet twice a week (as a psychiatrist) and his visits run hundreds of dollars.

I have never had an experience with a physician as disturbing as the one I had with Dr. Abrams. His office is in a basement with a handful of folding chairs. He didn't remember that we had scheduled an appointment. He has piles of patient papers everywhere. It felt like going to see a slightly senile hoarder uncle, not a doctor. I was so uncomfortable I just stood up and left 5 minutes into the appointment. Avoid at all costs.

I have always been weary of Psych. Dr's. My brother had been seeing him for a while and I had noticed a improvement in his health. After my first apt. with him, I was a little taken back at how much better I had felt. 2 years later and he is still there for me. I don't know where I would be with out him. Does he have his quirks, maybe. All I know is I may not be on this side of the dirt if not for him.

I cannot believe how unprofessional and rude this dr is. I have worked w/ many psychiatrists myself, and it is appalling that this dr conducts himself in the manner in which he does. He will take calls repeatedly in the middle of your appointment, leaves the door wide open, allows other people to pop into the room and interrupt your appointment...no regard for HIPPA. You will be lucky if he even remembers your scheduled appt, and even luckier if he remembers who you are when you call to resched.

He was very rude and gruff. I'm not positive but I think he might be out of his mind. He was answering his phone during the appointment. After he asked me questions about why I was there he talked in a rambling fashion about the problems of other patients of his and he also sprinkled in some thoughts that were relevant to me. Sounded rehearsed. He also asked me if I go beat up cops when I get depressed. I don't know what that was about but he definitely sounds like he has some prejudice issues.
