Biography: Dr. Stoopler received his Bachelor of Science degree from Tulane University in 1971 and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1975. He completed his residency at North Shore University Hospital/Memorial Hospital and his oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City before joining the Columbia faculty in 1980. Biography: Yacha Genfi is an Adult Health Primary Care Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Neurology Division of Neuro-Oncology at New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She received her BSN from Holy Family University in Philadelphia. Yacha began her nursing career as an RN in the Medical-Surgical and Telemetry unit in the Northwell Health system where she closely monitored and managed a high volume of patients including those suffering from multiple sclerosis, transient ischemic attacks, strokes, and seizures. During this time, she completed her MSN from Rutgers University in New Jersey and obtained board certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). She later went on to work at New York University within the department of Psychiatry where she assessed patients with traumatic brain injuries and then went on to be employed by Columbia University's Clinical Protocol and Data Management department where she managed patients enrolled in neuro-oncology clinical trials. Yacha's previous experience provided her with a strong foundation to transition to her current role as a Neuro-Oncology Nurse Practitioner. In close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of neuro-oncology providers, Yacha provides comprehensive care to brain and spinal tumor patients.

Biography: Dr. Ravi P. Kiran is the co-director of the Global Center for Integrated Colorectal Surgery and IBD Interventional Endoscopy at NewYork-Presbyerian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Prior to that, he served as chief and program director of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center for over a decade. He is also the Director of the Center for Innovation and Outcomes Research in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Kiran, a renowned surgeon-scientist with expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, and other complicated colorectal conditions, joined NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia from the Cleveland Clinic, where he was staff surgeon and head of the research section in the Department of Colorectal Surgery and director of its Rupert B. Turnbull Jr. School of Enterostomal Therapy. Dr. Kiran brings a wealth of experience in laparoscopic and open colorectal surgery, anorectal procedures and reoperative abdominal and pelvic surgery. With expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like complex Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, he specializes in bowel conservation as well as avoiding an ostomy (external bag) for these conditions when others may be unable. Having trained with Dr Victor Fazio at the Cleveland Clinic, he is an expert at pouch procedures. In addition to J and S pouch creation, he has experience in the repair, revision and redo of these pouches when pouch failure occurs. In addition to IBD, he is also expert in the surgical management of primary and recurrent colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, enterocutaneous fistula, functional bowel problems including constipation, incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. He is one of only a few highly skilled surgeons world-wide to perform continent ileostomy reservoir procedures and other complex operations to avoid a permanent ostomy after rectal or colon resection. As a researcher, Dr. Kiran has specific interests in surgical outcomes and quality and in evidence-based strategies for inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions. He is board certified in surgery and in colon and rectal surgery from the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS) and is a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Glasgow. The author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Kiran is also an editor and reviewer for numerous prominent journals and textbooks. Biography: Dr. William Middlesworth joined the medical staff of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia (MSCHONY), Division of Pediatric Surgery in 1997. He currently serves as director of the Pediatric ECMO Program, and Residency Program Director of the Pediatric Surgical Fellowship. Dr. Middlesworth has founded and leads the Pediatric Thyroid Center and the REACH (Researching Esophageal Atresia for Children's Health) Clinic. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Middlesworth spent two years in the Genetics Department at the Boston Children's Hospital on work leading to the identification and characterization of the dystrophin gene, important in the pathophysiology of muscular dystrophy. He went on to medical school at Rutgers University, and completed his general surgery training at the University of Maryland Medical System. During residency he spent a year as a surgical research fellow at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. His pediatric surgery fellowship was completed at MSCHONY. Biography: Dr. Accordino graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor of science in Pre-medicine with minors in Health Policy and Administration and Biology. She completed her medical degree at The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. While in medical school she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society which recognizes high educational achievement. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Weill Cornell Medical Center and her Medical Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Fellow. During that time, she was awarded a Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award and Merit Award. She also served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cancer-Related Population Sciences supported by the National Cancer Institute for her work in quality improvement and health outcomes research. Upon fellowship graduation she became an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Columbia University. Biography: Julian Abrams, MD is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and Director of Clinical Research for the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He is a specialist in the care of patients with Barrett's esophagus, early esophageal cancer, and other esophageal disorders. His research focus is on risk factors for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer, with a particular focus on the role of the oral and esophageal microbiome as disease biomarkers, promoters of neoplasia, and targets for chemoprevention. He also has conducted extensive outcomes research related to endoscopic therapy for Barrett's esophagus and associated neoplasia.

Biography: Dr. Amengual is the Herbert Irving Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Center for Lymphoid Malignancies, and Hebert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center here at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Amengual obtained a degree in Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University where she graduated with honors. She attained her Medical Doctorate from New York Medical College, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Amengual then went on to complete her fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the NYU Langone Medical Center, where she participated in the Physician-Scientist Training Program and graduated as a Dean's Scholar. She is the recipient of several awards and scholarships for her research, including the Irving Scholarship, the Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research and as a Scholar of the Amos Medical Faculty Development Award Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Society of Hematology. She was also selected to participate in the prestigious American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)/American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Vail Workshop Methods in Clinical Cancer Research, the European Hematology Association/American Society of Hematology Translational Research Training Program and the South West Oncology Group (SWOG) Leadership Academy. These competitive programs select the most promising faculty for enriched development and have laid the foundation for her research. She has now served on the faculty or review committee of several of these programs. As an R01-funded physician-scientist, Dr. Amengual is focused on translating the latest scientific discoveries regarding cancer cell behavior into novel treatment platforms. She aims to translate observations and concepts developed in the laboratory directly into patient care. Specifically, she is focused on combination epigenetic targeting for both B-cell and T-cell lymphomas. She continues to develop new pharmacologic strategies directed at altering these diseases at their genetic roots, now collaborating with investigators from backgrounds of diverse scientific expertise. Dr. Amengual has been studying the effects HDAC inhibitors in combination with EZH2 inhibitors to capitalize on two common mutations driving growth of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cells. In addition, she has studied targeting the BCL6:p53 pathway in order to shift the balance of oncogene and tumor suppressor function using novel therapeutic approaches. For T-cell lymphoma Dr. Amengual has led a clinical trial combining HDAC inhibitors with the novel antifolate drug, pralatrexate. The pralatrexate plus romidepsin combination has led to dramatic responses in patients with relapsed T-cell lymphoma and will serve as the basis of more trials to come aimed at improving outcomes with patients with these diseases. Building on these discoveries, Dr. Amengual is now evaluating the interplay of epigenetics with immune surveillance and endogenous retroviral expression in the setting of lymphoma. Dr. Amengual has lectured at academic institutions and conferences around the world, and at forums such as the Lymphoma Research Foundation and the American Hematology Society's Highlights of ASH. She has published numerous chapters and peer reviewed articles on the biology and treatment of lymphoma, and serves as a Scientific Reviewer for a number of journals in the field, including Journal of Clinical Oncology and as an Editorial Board Member of Clinical Cancer Research. She has sat on grant review and abstract review committees for meetings such as the American Society of Hematology where she has also chaired sessions, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. She is actively involved in the NCI's National Clinical Trial Network, SWOG, as a Lymphoma Working Group Committee Member. Dr. Amengual is involved in numerous clinical trials for lymphoma, enabling our patients to access the best opportunities for the treatment of their disease. Biography: Divaya Bhutani, MD, is a world-leading expert in multiple myeloma therapies and treatment strategies whose work in this field has been extensively published. As a hematologist and oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital, he specializes in cancer care, blood disorders, and benign hematology. He also serves as an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. As an expert in myeloma, Dr. Bhutani is a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. A well-respected and accomplished researcher, Dr. Bhutani has presented his work at at annual medical meetings of the American Society of Hematology and has been featured in medical journals, including Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Journal of Clinical Oncology. Biography: Myron M. Studner Professor of Cancer Research and Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University, Associate Director for Population Science, Leader of the Prevention, Control, and Disparities Program for the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia, and Co-Director of the Cancer Prevention Center of New York Presbyterian Hospital Dr. Neugut is a medical oncologist with a particular interest in gastroIntestinal tract cancers, especially of colorectal and gasteric cancers. Under the auspices of Columbia's MD/PhD program, he received his MD and a PhD in Pathobiology in 1977. He did his training in Internal Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He returned to Columbia University as an Andrew Mellon Fellow in Epidemiology and Medicine to obtain an MPH in Epidemiology in 1983. Dr. Neugut then joined the faculty at Columbia University with appointments in Medicine and Epidemiology. As both a practicing medical oncologist and cancer epidemiologist, Dr. Alfred Neugut's major interests have been on GI tract cancers, notably the epidemiology of colorectal adenomas and cancer, as well as colonoscopic screening. He serves as co-principal investigator of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, a large multi-center effort to explore environmental causes of breast cancer on Long Island. Most recently, his efforts have focused on more clinical topics, such as the epidemiology of second malignancies and the use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy among elderly cancer patients. Dr. Neugut focuses a great deal on racial disparities in incidence and survival from cancer and, in particular, variations across subgroups of people of African descent. He leads two large training grants in cancer-related population sciences that together fund 15 pre and postdoctoral trainees in cancer epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental health sciences, and serves as a mentor to a number of junior faculty.

Biography: Dr. Fojo received his MD and PhD from the University of Miami and completed internal medicine training at Washington University School of Medicine / Barnes Hospital. He joined the National Cancer Institute in 1982 as a Clinical Associate in the Medicine Branch and after training with Drs. Ira Pastan and Michael Gottesman, became a Principal Investigator in the Medicine Branch of the National Cancer Institute. As a Principal Investigator he went on to establish a highly successful translational clinical program that began by exploring agents to reverse drug resistance, continued with work on the optimal use of Taxol®, and the development of novel microtubule-targeting agents and has focused on the development of therapies for endocrine and neuroendocrine cancers. Dr. Fojo has expertise in the management of patients with adrenocortical cancer, malignant pheochromocytoma and other neuroendocrine malignancies, and thyroid cancer. These cancers also comprise areas of very active basic science interest given their unique properties and the possibilities to target such cancers more precisely. The ultimate goal is to develop novel therapies for these often very refractory cancers so that there will be additional options available for treatment for patients with these cancers. Ongoing laboratory efforts are focused on developing such novel therapies to treat patients with adrenal cancer, pheochromocytoma and a spectrum of neuroendocrine tumors. In the laboratory Dr. Fojo has also worked to understand the molecular basis of drug resistance, and was involved in the original work relating to several ABC transporters. Additionally, his laboratory originally identified rearrangements involving the MDR-1 gene as a novel mechanism of drug resistance in several cancers, a molecular event recently demonstrated as very important in ovarian cancer. He has also been very involved in research on microtubule-targeting agents, helping to establish as a novel paradigm the interference with microtubule trafficking, rather than mitosis, for the mechanism of action for these important drugs. In addition to his clinical expertise Dr. Fojo has been very interested in the design, conduct and interpretation of oncology clinical trials and in collaboration with Wilfred Stein, PhD and Susan Bates, MD has helped to pioneer a novel method of analysis that dissects rates of tumor growth and regression as concurrent events. Related to this he has also written extensively about the cost of cancer therapeutics, the magnitude of the problem and how this might be addressed. Dr. Fojo served as Program Director for the Medical Oncology Fellowship Program at the National Cancer Institute, the largest fellowship program in the NIH and one of the largest medical oncology programs in the United States. Over the years Dr. Fojo has helped to train more than 350 medical oncologists.
