Biography: Dr. Jeffrey Odel is a Professor of Ophthalmology at CUMC and specializes in the field of Neuro-Ophthalmology. Dr. Odel is active in both clinical and research arenas. His present research interest is in developing efficient clinical tools to distinguish vision loss and visual field loss of optic nerve origin from that of retinal origin. He works with Donald C. Hood, Ph. D., of the department of psychology, in a weekly conference where visual fields are correlated with multifocal electroretinography, multifocal visual evoked potentials and spectral domain optical coherence tomography. He will be addressing with Dr. Hood the most cost effective diagnostic pathway of the work-up of visual loss under different clinical scenarios.

Biography: Dr. Jason Horowitz, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, joined Columbia in 2011 after a rewarding 25-year experience delivering retinal care to the Waterbury, Connecticut community. A graduate of Harvard College and Yale Medical School, Dr. Horowitz was an ophthalmology resident at Yale before completing a retinal fellowship at Cornell, where he trained under Dr. Stanley Chang. Dr. Horowitz's interests in ophthalmology are wide ranging. He is currently Medical Director of the Residents' Eye Clinic at Harkness, where some of the most complicated and diverse patients in the world are evaluated and treated for an astonishing variety of ocular diseases. In a completely different domain, Dr. Horowitz has assumed the role of performing essential evaluations for retinopathy of prematurity in the infant patients of the world famous neonatal intensive care unit at Columbia's Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York. In yet another realm, Dr. Horowitz manages complex retinal and macular disorders in adults such as retinal detachments and macular pucker. Together with his 36 years of retinal practice experience, Dr. Horowitz employs the full range of cutting-edge medical and surgical modalities in his practice. He particularly values the ability to use the most improved, up-to-date laser, pharmacological, and surgical therapies to successfully prevent (and, in some cases, even correct) profound visual impairment in conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and macular holes or epiretinal membranes.

Biography: Aakriti Shukla MD, MSc is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at CUMC and Attending Ophthalmologist at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Shukla is a board-certified ophthalmologist and specializes in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and cataracts. Her surgical expertise includes minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, traditional glaucoma surgery, glaucoma laser surgery, and cataract surgery.Dr. Shukla completed her undergraduate studies as a Trustee and Renaissance Scholar at the University of Southern California. She received her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, where she was awarded a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship and earned the Edith and Denton McKane Memorial Award for Outstanding Research in Ophthalmology. She completed her training as an ophthalmology resident and served as chief resident at Columbia University's Harkness Eye Institute. She earned a Master of Science degree at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in Patient-Oriented Research. She pursued further glaucoma subspecialty training at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Prior to her appointment at Columbia University, she served as glaucoma faculty at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Shukla has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and has been invited to speak nationally and internationally on her patient care and research. Biography: Danielle Trief MD MSc, is an associate professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Trief specializes in the medical and surgical management of cornea, pediatric cornea, cataract, and external diseases. Her surgical expertise includes corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, secondary intraocular lens placement, and anterior segment reconstruction. Dr. Trief established a clinic dedicated to children with corneal diseases. Dr. Trief received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. She was awarded a Thoroun Fellowship to pursue a Masters of Neuroscience at Oxford University, where she graduated with honors. She completed medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye and Ear infirmary and subsequently pursued a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Trief has published numerous articles, book chapters, and teaching videos on adult and pediatric cornea. She has been invited to speak nationally and internationally on her research topics. Biography: Dr. Kimberly Sippel attended Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, graduating with honors in Biochemical Sciences. She received her medical degree with the Alpha Omega Alpha honor distinction from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City. Following two years of training in general surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Sippel completed ophthalmology residency training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. She then completed the fellowship program in Cornea and External Disease at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and is a recipient of both a Heed Foundation fellowship, as well as the American Ophthalmological Society Knapp Foundation fellowship award.Dr. Sippel also pursued several years of vision-related laboratory investigation as a Research Fellow at both the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Sippel is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.Dr. Sippel is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Weill CornellMedicine and the NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. Biography: Srilaxmi Bearelly, MD, MHS is a retina specialist with expertise in the evaluation and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, choroidal neovascularization and macular disorders. Her experience in the treatment of retinal diseases started with a seven-year tenure on the Vitreoretinal Service at Duke University Eye Center in North Carolina (2003 to 2010). Since then, she joined Columbia's faculty in 2010. She has treated thousands of patients, and helped patients and their families through their treatments. She has also volunteered her medical expertise in underserviced areas, such as El Salvador and rural United States. Dr. Bearelly received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, received her M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School, and a Masters of Health Sciences from Duke University School of Medicine. Following her ophthalmology training at Northwestern University, she completed her fellowship training in diseases of the retina and vitreous at Duke University Eye Center. She has written 70 articles, chapters and abstracts, and frequently presents at scientific and professional conferences both nationally and abroad. Currently, Dr. Bearelly is a collaborator on a Columbia University clinical study of retinal changes in preeclamspia (a disease of pregnancy). She is recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in Ophthalmology, and with Castle Connolly's Exceptional Women in Medicine award. She received several research awards, including an NIH/NEI K12 and K23 Mentored Research Career Award, and a Young Investigator Award by Retinal Degenerations Symposium at the International Congress of Eye Research Meeting in China. Dr. Bearelly has been certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Biography: Dr. Levy is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and the Director of the Pediatric Ophthalmology service at Weill Cornell Medicine and a member of the Weill Cornell Ophthalmology Department.After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he completed his ophthalmology residency at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and New York University. He completed fellowships in neuro-ophthalmology, at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and then pediatric ophthalmology, at Children's Hospital Boston.Before returning to New York, he was a Clinical Instructor of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and on the staff at Children's Hospital Boston, where he was also the director of residency training for the ophthalmology department.Dr. Levy sees children of all ages and adults with strabismus.
