Biography: Prakash Satwani, MD specializes in the use of bone marrow transplantation to treat children and adolescents with leukemia, lymphoma, or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Bone marrow transplantation is a dynamic, intriguing field with multiple complex issues. Dr. Satwani has always enjoyed solving puzzles and is attracted to the intellectual challenge of caring for patients whose lives may be saved or extended with bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Satwani is also inspired and motivated by the long-lasting and rich relationships formed with patients and their families, and often keeps in touch with families long after their child's treatment has been completed. Dr. Satwani teaches medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and nurse practitioners about bone marrow transplantation. It's important to educate people so they can learn the latest advances and provide the best care possible for patients. To continue to achieve those advances, Dr. Satwani conducts clinical research in reducing the life-threatening complications related to transplantation, such as infections and graft-versus-host disease. Dr. Satwani and colleagues also evaluate reduced-intensity bone marrow transplantation preparative regimens, which use lower doses of chemotherapy with the hope of decreasing short-term and long-term complications without compromising the effectiveness of treatment.

Biography: Myron M. Studner Professor of Cancer Research and Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University, Associate Director for Population Science, Leader of the Prevention, Control, and Disparities Program for the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia, and Co-Director of the Cancer Prevention Center of New York Presbyterian Hospital Dr. Neugut is a medical oncologist with a particular interest in gastroIntestinal tract cancers, especially of colorectal and gasteric cancers. Under the auspices of Columbia's MD/PhD program, he received his MD and a PhD in Pathobiology in 1977. He did his training in Internal Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He returned to Columbia University as an Andrew Mellon Fellow in Epidemiology and Medicine to obtain an MPH in Epidemiology in 1983. Dr. Neugut then joined the faculty at Columbia University with appointments in Medicine and Epidemiology. As both a practicing medical oncologist and cancer epidemiologist, Dr. Alfred Neugut's major interests have been on GI tract cancers, notably the epidemiology of colorectal adenomas and cancer, as well as colonoscopic screening. He serves as co-principal investigator of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, a large multi-center effort to explore environmental causes of breast cancer on Long Island. Most recently, his efforts have focused on more clinical topics, such as the epidemiology of second malignancies and the use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy among elderly cancer patients. Dr. Neugut focuses a great deal on racial disparities in incidence and survival from cancer and, in particular, variations across subgroups of people of African descent. He leads two large training grants in cancer-related population sciences that together fund 15 pre and postdoctoral trainees in cancer epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental health sciences, and serves as a mentor to a number of junior faculty.

Biography: Dr. Raza is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the MDS Center at Columbia University in New York, NY. She started her research in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in 1982 and moved to Rush University, Chicago, Illinois in 1992, where she was the Charles Arthur Weaver Professor in Oncology and Director, Division of Myeloid Diseases. The MDS Program, along with a Tissue Repository containing more than 50,000 samples from MDS and acute leukemia patients was successfully relocated to the University of Massachusetts in 2004 and to Columbia University in 2010. Before moving to New York, Dr. Raza was the Chief of Hematology Oncology and the Gladys Smith Martin Professor of Oncology at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. She has published the results of her laboratory research and clinical trials in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Blood, Cancer, Cancer Research, the British Journal of Hematology, Leukemia, and Leukemia Research. Dr. Raza serves on numerous national and international panels as a reviewer, consultant, and advisor and is the recipient of a number of awards.

Biography: Dr. Amengual is the Herbert Irving Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Center for Lymphoid Malignancies, and Hebert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center here at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Amengual obtained a degree in Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University where she graduated with honors. She attained her Medical Doctorate from New York Medical College, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Amengual then went on to complete her fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the NYU Langone Medical Center, where she participated in the Physician-Scientist Training Program and graduated as a Dean's Scholar. She is the recipient of several awards and scholarships for her research, including the Irving Scholarship, the Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research and as a Scholar of the Amos Medical Faculty Development Award Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Society of Hematology. She was also selected to participate in the prestigious American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)/American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Vail Workshop Methods in Clinical Cancer Research, the European Hematology Association/American Society of Hematology Translational Research Training Program and the South West Oncology Group (SWOG) Leadership Academy. These competitive programs select the most promising faculty for enriched development and have laid the foundation for her research. She has now served on the faculty or review committee of several of these programs. As an R01-funded physician-scientist, Dr. Amengual is focused on translating the latest scientific discoveries regarding cancer cell behavior into novel treatment platforms. She aims to translate observations and concepts developed in the laboratory directly into patient care. Specifically, she is focused on combination epigenetic targeting for both B-cell and T-cell lymphomas. She continues to develop new pharmacologic strategies directed at altering these diseases at their genetic roots, now collaborating with investigators from backgrounds of diverse scientific expertise. Dr. Amengual has been studying the effects HDAC inhibitors in combination with EZH2 inhibitors to capitalize on two common mutations driving growth of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cells. In addition, she has studied targeting the BCL6:p53 pathway in order to shift the balance of oncogene and tumor suppressor function using novel therapeutic approaches. For T-cell lymphoma Dr. Amengual has led a clinical trial combining HDAC inhibitors with the novel antifolate drug, pralatrexate. The pralatrexate plus romidepsin combination has led to dramatic responses in patients with relapsed T-cell lymphoma and will serve as the basis of more trials to come aimed at improving outcomes with patients with these diseases. Building on these discoveries, Dr. Amengual is now evaluating the interplay of epigenetics with immune surveillance and endogenous retroviral expression in the setting of lymphoma. Dr. Amengual has lectured at academic institutions and conferences around the world, and at forums such as the Lymphoma Research Foundation and the American Hematology Society's Highlights of ASH. She has published numerous chapters and peer reviewed articles on the biology and treatment of lymphoma, and serves as a Scientific Reviewer for a number of journals in the field, including Journal of Clinical Oncology and as an Editorial Board Member of Clinical Cancer Research. She has sat on grant review and abstract review committees for meetings such as the American Society of Hematology where she has also chaired sessions, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. She is actively involved in the NCI's National Clinical Trial Network, SWOG, as a Lymphoma Working Group Committee Member. Dr. Amengual is involved in numerous clinical trials for lymphoma, enabling our patients to access the best opportunities for the treatment of their disease. Dr. Amengual has clinical expertise in lymphoma, HIV- and EBV-related hematologic illnesses.

Biography: Diane George, MD cares for children and adolescents undergoing stem cell transplantation as a treatment for cancer (particularly leukemia and lymphoma), noncancerous blood disorders (like sickle cell anemia), and immunodeficiencies. She specializes in transplantation for patients who don't have a related bone marrow donor, and also takes care of patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation for solid tumors. Dr. George was originally attracted to the field of pediatric oncology because she wanted to take on the challenge of fighting pediatric cancer, and stem cell transplantation offers the ultimate cure in select patients. It is a complex medical field, and Dr. George enjoys being able to take care of children with complex medical conditions. Dr. George also conducts clinical research. She is currently evaluating a procedure called "CD34-selected stem cell transplantation" to remove T-cells from donor bone marrow. This approach reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) - a potential complication of bone marrow transplantation in which T-cells from the donor attack the tissue of the recipient. This approach benefits patients who do not have a well-matched family donor, and it could potentially make bone marrow transplantation an option for more patients. Dr. George is also interested in studying how a patient's immune system rebuilds itself after CD34-selected stem cell transplantation. Biography: Julian Abrams, MD is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and Director of Clinical Research for the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He is a specialist in the care of patients with Barrett's esophagus, early esophageal cancer, and other esophageal disorders. His research focus is on risk factors for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer, with a particular focus on the role of the oral and esophageal microbiome as disease biomarkers, promoters of neoplasia, and targets for chemoprevention. He also has conducted extensive outcomes research related to endoscopic therapy for Barrett's esophagus and associated neoplasia.

Biography: Maria Garzon, M.D. is Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Dermatology at NYP Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. With a significant body of published research, leadership and teaching experience, Dr. Garzon is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric dermatology. She is a leading expert on the care of children and adolescents with vascular anomalies, particularly hemangiomas and vascular malformations. Dr. Garzon is the Founder and Co-Director of the NYP/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (NYP/CUIMC) Interdisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Group, a founding member and past President of the Hemangioma Investigator Group (HIG) and a founding member of the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA). She is a past President of both the Society for Pediatric Dermatology and the New York Dermatological Society. She was elected to the Academy of Clinical Excellence (ACE) at VP&S and named a Samberg Scholar at NYP Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. Dr. Garzon has authored numerous articles and book chapters and has lectured at many national and international meetings including the American Academy of Dermatology, American Academy of Pediatrics, Pediatric Academic Societies, World Congress of Pediatric Dermatology, National Institute of Health and International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies. Biography: Dr. William Middlesworth joined the medical staff of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia (MSCHONY), Division of Pediatric Surgery in 1997. He currently serves as director of the Pediatric ECMO Program, and Residency Program Director of the Pediatric Surgical Fellowship. Dr. Middlesworth has founded and leads the Pediatric Thyroid Center and the REACH (Researching Esophageal Atresia for Children's Health) Clinic. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Middlesworth spent two years in the Genetics Department at the Boston Children's Hospital on work leading to the identification and characterization of the dystrophin gene, important in the pathophysiology of muscular dystrophy. He went on to medical school at Rutgers University, and completed his general surgery training at the University of Maryland Medical System. During residency he spent a year as a surgical research fellow at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. His pediatric surgery fellowship was completed at MSCHONY. In addition to the responsibilities listed above, Dr. Middlesworth serves on numerous hospital and university committees focused on Quality and Patient Safety, and is the Quality Chair for Columbia Department of Surgery. He is the Surgeon Champion at the Columbia campus for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) of the American College of Surgeons. He chairs a multi-institution collaborative to reduce harm and enhance safety in the peri-operative setting that is sponsored by MCIC Vermont, the member-owned malpractice insurance carrier for Columbia, Cornell, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine, University of Rochester Medicine and Yale. Dr. Middlesworth is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
