Biography: Dr. Ravi P. Kiran is the co-director of the Global Center for Integrated Colorectal Surgery and IBD Interventional Endoscopy at NewYork-Presbyerian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Prior to that, he served as chief and program director of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center for over a decade. He is also the Director of the Center for Innovation and Outcomes Research in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Kiran, a renowned surgeon-scientist with expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, and other complicated colorectal conditions, joined NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia from the Cleveland Clinic, where he was staff surgeon and head of the research section in the Department of Colorectal Surgery and director of its Rupert B. Turnbull Jr. School of Enterostomal Therapy. Dr. Kiran brings a wealth of experience in laparoscopic and open colorectal surgery, anorectal procedures and reoperative abdominal and pelvic surgery. With expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like complex Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, he specializes in bowel conservation as well as avoiding an ostomy (external bag) for these conditions when others may be unable. Having trained with Dr Victor Fazio at the Cleveland Clinic, he is an expert at pouch procedures. In addition to J and S pouch creation, he has experience in the repair, revision and redo of these pouches when pouch failure occurs. In addition to IBD, he is also expert in the surgical management of primary and recurrent colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, enterocutaneous fistula, functional bowel problems including constipation, incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. He is one of only a few highly skilled surgeons world-wide to perform continent ileostomy reservoir procedures and other complex operations to avoid a permanent ostomy after rectal or colon resection. As a researcher, Dr. Kiran has specific interests in surgical outcomes and quality and in evidence-based strategies for inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions. With a joint appointment at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health, Dr. Kiran facilitates research collaborations in epidemiology between the Department of Surgery and the Mailman School. Dr. Kiran received his medical degree from and completed surgical training at Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India, and received advanced training in colorectal surgery in the United Kingdom. He completed his general surgery residency at Yale-Saint Mary's Hospital and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and fellowship training in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Biography: Dr. Raza is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the MDS Center at Columbia University in New York, NY. She started her research in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in 1982 and moved to Rush University, Chicago, Illinois in 1992, where she was the Charles Arthur Weaver Professor in Oncology and Director, Division of Myeloid Diseases. The MDS Program, along with a Tissue Repository containing more than 50,000 samples from MDS and acute leukemia patients was successfully relocated to the University of Massachusetts in 2004 and to Columbia University in 2010. Before moving to New York, Dr. Raza was the Chief of Hematology Oncology and the Gladys Smith Martin Professor of Oncology at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. She has published the results of her laboratory research and clinical trials in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Blood, Cancer, Cancer Research, the British Journal of Hematology, Leukemia, and Leukemia Research. Dr. Raza serves on numerous national and international panels as a reviewer, consultant, and advisor and is the recipient of a number of awards.

Biography: Dr. Emond is the Vice Chairman of Surgery at Columbia University. He has over 30 years of experience performing liver transplantation and complex liver and biliary surgery in children and adults, including the first living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in the United States. Dr. Emond has published extensively in this field and was the co-chair of the NIH A2ALL program for 13 years. In collaboration with the department of Medicine at Columbia, Dr. Emond recruited the leadership of the Columbia Center for Translational immunology that created the foundation for translational and clinical research in transplantation tolerance. This will lead the way to inducing transplant tolerance in liver patients with the mixed chimerism strategy. As Director of Transplantation at the Columbia University Medical Center Dr. Emond's activities foster clinical excellence and research across all 11 of the solid organ transplant programs at the Medical Center. In recognition of his national and international leadership in transplantation, Dr. Emond is the past president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the pre-eminent association of a transplant surgery. Contribution to Science Living donor liver transplantation Dr. Emond has spent a substantial portion of his career developing living donor liver transplantation and studying the safety of the procedure in both the donor and recipient. He participated in the first living donor liver transplant in the United States and focused on refining the techniques of performing living donor liver transplants and split liver transplants. He was the national co-chair of the NIH-sponsored Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation (A2ALL) consortium from 2002 to 2015 to study the safety and outcomes of living donor liver transplants. Hepatic resection/ischemia Dr. Emond developed techniques for surgical resection of liver tumors and studied the effect of ischemia during resection on postoperative liver function. These studies include the outcomes of the extent of hepatectomy, the biochemical response to major hepatectomy and ischemia-reperfusion injury of the liver in rodent models. He has studied the clinical safety of inducing total vascular exclusion to provide a bloodless field during the liver transection. This has applications in both liver cancer and living donor hepatectomies. Hepatocellular carcinoma treatment Dr. Emond has studied many aspects of managing patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. These studies have included characterizing the risk factors for recurrence of disease following transplantation due to comorbidities and tumor characteristics. The research team has also studied the optimal method of preventing tumor growth in patients with HCC on the liver transplant wait list in addition to optimal strategies of liver allocation to optimize outcomes following liver transplantation. These studies have contributed to proposed changes in UNOS exception point allocation for liver transplant candidates with HCC. Pediatric liver transplantation Dr. Emond helped develop the field of pediatric liver transplantation. Contributions to this field include: the use of living donors for pediatric patients; use of auxiliary liver transplants for metabolic diseases; use of partial liver grafts for pediatric patients; and technical modifications that improved outcomes for this patient population. Biography: Prakash Satwani, MD specializes in the use of bone marrow transplantation to treat children and adolescents with leukemia, lymphoma, or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Bone marrow transplantation is a dynamic, intriguing field with multiple complex issues. Dr. Satwani has always enjoyed solving puzzles and is attracted to the intellectual challenge of caring for patients whose lives may be saved or extended with bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Satwani is also inspired and motivated by the long-lasting and rich relationships formed with patients and their families, and often keeps in touch with families long after their child's treatment has been completed. Dr. Satwani teaches medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and nurse practitioners about bone marrow transplantation. Biography: Diane George, MD cares for children and adolescents undergoing stem cell transplantation as a treatment for cancer (particularly leukemia and lymphoma), noncancerous blood disorders (like sickle cell anemia), and immunodeficiencies. She specializes in transplantation for patients who don't have a related bone marrow donor, and also takes care of patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation for solid tumors. Dr. George was originally attracted to the field of pediatric oncology because she wanted to take on the challenge of fighting pediatric cancer, and stem cell transplantation offers the ultimate cure in select patients. It is a complex medical field, and Dr. George enjoys being able to take care of children with complex medical conditions. Dr. George also conducts clinical research. She is currently evaluating a procedure called "CD34-selected stem cell transplantation" to remove T-cells from donor bone marrow. This approach reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) - a potential complication of bone marrow transplantation in which T-cells from the donor attack the tissue of the recipient. This approach benefits patients who do not have a well-matched family donor, and it could potentially make bone marrow transplantation an option for more patients. Biography: Maria Garzon, M.D. is Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Dermatology at NYP Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. With a significant body of published research, leadership and teaching experience, Dr. Garzon is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric dermatology. She is a leading expert on the care of children and adolescents with vascular anomalies, particularly hemangiomas and vascular malformations. Dr. Garzon is the Founder and Co-Director of the NYP/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (NYP/CUIMC) Interdisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Group, a founding member and past President of the Hemangioma Investigator Group (HIG) and a founding member of the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA). Biography: Julian Abrams, MD is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and Director of Clinical Research for the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He is a specialist in the care of patients with Barrett's esophagus, early esophageal cancer, and other esophageal disorders. His research focus is on risk factors for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer, with a particular focus on the role of the oral and esophageal microbiome as disease biomarkers, promoters of neoplasia, and targets for chemoprevention. He also has conducted extensive outcomes research related to endoscopic therapy for Barrett's esophagus and associated neoplasia.

Biography: Dr. Lentzsch is a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis Program at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. She received her medical and doctorate degrees from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, where she also completed her residency and fellowship. She did a research fellowship, studying the mechanism of action of thalidomide and its derivatives in multiple myeloma, in the Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Center under the mentorship of Dr. Kenneth Anderson at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, USA. Dr. Lentzsch was recruited in August 2004 to the University of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI), PA, USA, and served as Clinical Director of the Multiple Myeloma Program at UPCI before accepting the position as Director of the Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis Program at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Trivedi received her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and completed her residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to complete her fellowship in hematology/oncology at Columbia University. Dr. Trivedi co-leads the Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Program, a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary initiative aimed at screening, preventing, diagnosing, and treating hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. This innovative program brings together the resources of a world-renowned academic institution, including cutting-edge genomic testing, clinical trials, and experts in hereditary cancers across different specialties. He currently serves as director of the Pediatric ECMO Program, and Residency Program Director of the Pediatric Surgical Fellowship. Dr. Middlesworth has founded and leads the Pediatric Thyroid Center and the REACH (Researching Esophageal Atresia for Children's Health) Clinic. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Middlesworth spent two years in the Genetics Department at the Boston Children's Hospital on work leading to the identification and characterization of the dystrophin gene, important in the pathophysiology of muscular dystrophy. He went on to medical school at Rutgers University, and completed his general surgery training at the University of Maryland Medical System. Biography: Mariam El-Ashmawy, MD PhD is a medical oncologist andtranslational scientist with specialization in the treatment of advanced skincancer and ocular melanoma. Her research investigates the complex geneticlandscape of cancer in order to develop new therapies. In the laboratory, her work has been dedicated to understanding the complex genomic landscape of cancer and developing novel targeted therapeutic strategies. Her ongoing projects include testing novel RAS pathway inhibitors in preclinical models of gastric and esophageal cancer as well as a first-in-human clinical trials for patients with NRAS mutant melanoma.

Biography: Monica Bhatia, MD specializes in the care of children with noncancerous blood disorders who may benefit from bone marrow transplantation, especially sickle cell anemia. She and her colleagues are working to reduce the toxicity (side effects) and complications of this treatment without compromising its effectiveness, and to make it available to more patients. The field of pediatric hematology brings with it many intellectual challenges, and bone marrow transplantation in particular is especially dynamic. Dr. Bhatia has the opportunity to provide care for the sickest children, potentially curing their disease. She builds strong relationships with her patients and their families that last for years. It is inspiring for her to see young patients grow up to lead healthy, productive lives. NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a robust program for bone marrow transplantation for sickle cell anemia - the only cure for this disease. Dr. Bhatia and her team have witnessed remarkable results among children who are cured with bone marrow transplantation and spared from the potentially life-threatening complications of sickle cell disease. Yet despite the advances made, only 15 percent of patients with sickle cell disease have a matched sibling bone marrow donor. Therefore, Dr. Bhatia and her team conduct research to evaluate a procedure called "CD34-selected stem cell transplantation" to remove T-cells from donor bone marrow for patients without a matched sibling donor. This approach reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a potential complication of bone marrow transplantation in which T-cells from the donor attack the tissue of the recipient. This approach to harnessing stem cells could potentially make bone marrow transplantation a safer, effective option for many patients who are seeking a cure for sickle cell disease. Dr. Bhatia and her colleagues are currently assessing reduced-intensity transplantation, which uses lower doses of chemotherapy to decrease the risk of side effects and long-term complications without lowering the effectiveness of treatment. She is also interested in looking for ways to further improve the quality of life of patients who have had a bone marrow transplant in addition to fertility preservation.

Biography: James H. Garvin, MD, PhD, is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist who specializes in the care of children and adolescents with brain tumors. He is Principal Investigator at CUMC for the Head Start Program of radiation-sparing intensive chemotherapy for infants and young children with brain tumors. He was principal investigator for a Children's Oncolgy Group protocol for childhood ependymoma. He also offers novel therapies for recurrent brain tumors through our program's membership in Developmental Therapeutics Program of the COG. In addition, Dr. Garvin started the pediatric bone marrow transplant program, and continues as a member of the BMT group. He has particular interest in autologous transplant for brain tumors and allogeneic transplant for metabolic disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes, as well as supportive care for BMT patients. Dr. Garvin became interested in pediatric hematology/oncology through research during medical school in the laboratory of a pediatric hematologist. He is a member of numerous professional societies in the field.

Biography: Dr. Andrew H. Lipsky is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center. He specializes in caring for adult patients with hematologic malignancies, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and lymphoma.Dr. Lipsky's research focuses on cancer genomics and new treatments for CLL. He has a special interest in using the latest bioinformatics techniques to study how cancer cells change and adapt during treatment. Utilizing these genomic insights, he hopes to better inform clinical trials and hasten the development of innovative therapies for patients with hematologic malignancies.Dr. Lipsky earned his medical degree from Rutgers - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed internship and residency in internal medicine at Montefiore - Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Biography: Manuela Orjuela-Grimm is a molecular epidemiologist and pediatric oncologist whose research focuses on vulnerability (including social) to environmental exposures, gene-nutrient/ environment interactions during windows of susceptibility such as pregnancy, early childhood, adolescence and the development of later genetic and epigenetic changes contributing to poorer health outcomes in childhood and adolescence. She leads EpiRbMx, a long-standing case control/ case series study examining exposure to methyl donors, folate pathway metabolism and risk for retinoblastoma in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of investigators including the Hospital Infantil de Mexico, the Hospital de Pediatria at the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS), the Instituto Nacional de Salud Publica (INSP), and the University of Toronto. In collaboration with INSP researchers, Dr. Orjuela is involved in multiple studies examining the intersection between food security, folate-related dietary intake, dietary diversity and environmental exposures in central Mexico, and in immigrants in New York. Interests: social contributors to dietary exposures, gene-nutrient interactions; one carbon donor metabolism; methylation; nutrient and environmental exposures during early life and later genetic and epigenetic effects; dietary assessment in Mexico, in populations on the move in Latin America; effects of acculturation and early life migration on nutrient/ environmental exposures in US Latinos.

Biography: Linda Wu, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Wu earned her MD degree from Weill Cornell Medical College and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She then completed fellowship training in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Wu is actively involved in research to improve treatments for cancer. Her research interests also include discovering biomarkers predictive of response and resistance to therapy and understanding the tumor microenvironment to improve the effectiveness of immunotherapy for gastrointestinal malignancies, and she has published multiple articles in these areas. Dr. Wu works closely as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver compassionate care at the highest levels, utilizing a personalized approach to offer cutting-edge therapies.

I believe in spending time with patients and families to ensure that they understand all of the options available to them. Biography: Dr. Furman is Director of the CLL Research Center at Weill Cornell Medicineand a member of the Lymphoma/Myeloma Service in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. At the Weill Cornell Breast Center, we work as a team to recommend the optimal treatment plan for each patient. We have begun a new initiative, a "survivorship" program to study and support our patients throughout their lifetime after a breast cancer diagnosis.
